May 1999: Acquisition of a Sexual Diary

The Archive for Sexology has acquired another sexual diary. It spans 44 years to date. The author, Mr. Z, was born in 1945. He is married and has two children. He is still alive and active today, so that additional installments of his diary can be expected.

The diary consists of a chronological narrative and a number of detailed graphs and tables recording autoerotic activities from 1954 to 1998, i.e from late childhood to middle age. The figures for the first seven years were estimated in retrospect, but from 1963 onward the figures were carefully and regularly recorded when the memory was still fresh. According to the diarist, they are therefore exact.

While reflecting the sexual activity of a single individual, the diary nevertheless offers some general insight into human sexual development over several decades. At the same time, it offers a practical illustration of the course, over time, of a single-minded, limited, and almost exclusive sexual activity. (For the first 12 years of his marriage, the diarist also had sporadic intercourse with his wife. However, since then, while remaining married, he has returned to exclusively autoerotic behavior.)

The Archive takes this opportunity to encourage others who might be keeping sexual diaries to get in touch with us and, if possible, provide us with their own records. Such sexual diaries are all the more valuable to science, if they can be collected in larger numbers.

The numerous graphs provided by Mr. Z and now in our possession illustrate various aspects of his experiences. The following graphs summarize the grand total of his autorerotic activities, 1. the accumulated total for 44 years, and 2. the totals of sexual activity year by year.
