Speaking of the 1866-7 period, Wickham (1895:p205)[1]: “Female children are betrothed
to young men whist they are still almost babies. The custom is that the
future bridegroom resides with the father-in-law elect, and overlooks the
education of his future wife, until such time [?] as she becomes fitted to be
taken to his own lodge. At such time they seem to be much petted, and not a
little spoilt”.
