A Message from the Robert Koch Institute

Prof. Dr. Reinhard Kurth is the director of the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin.

A warm welcome to all EFS congress participants!

The Robert Koch Institute is delighted that sexologists from 34 countries and all continents have gathered in Berlin to address a great variety of issues related to sexual health.

The last years of the past millennium have shown us that sexually transmitted infections once again have begun to threaten many areas of the globe, and that in this millennium the theory and practice of prevention will grow ever more in importance.

Our federal research institution is grateful that it was able to assist the European Federation of Sexology in organizing this timely congress in the city where Robert Koch, the great pioneer in the fight against infectious diseases, lived and died. His international outlook, his tireless travels to distant countries in the cause of eradicating such diseases, set an example in his own time and continue to be an inspiration to us today.

We hope that the present congress will take up and strengthen the cause of global prevention and the promotion of a disease-free, psychologically healthy, and personally fulfilling sexuality everywhere.
