August 1998: International Consultations

From July 31-August 3, 1998, the Archive was able to welcome specialists from the USA and China for a series of consultations. The American consultants were: Prof. Julius E. Linn (University of Alabama at Birmingham) and Dr. Frank J. Tombrello (University of Mississippi at Oxford). Prof. Linn is the director of Medical Publications of the UAB Health System and associate editor of the Annals of Epidemiology. Dr. Tombrello is a staff physician at his university's V. B. Harrison Student Health Center and, in the last few years, has been working in sports medicine and STDs.

Our consultation covered the following topics: sports medicine and sexuality, communicating effective STD prevention strategies, and exploring the potential role of the internet in the sexological training of health professionals.

On August 1, our discussions were joined by two consultants from the People's Republic of China: Prof. Tianmin Xu and Prof. Peicheng Hu, both from Beijing Medical University. Prof. Xu is the president of the China Sexology Association and Director of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences; Prof. Hu is a professor of medical psychology and Dean of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences. With them, we consulted further about the future expansion of the internet and the implications of this development for international sexological cooperation. We also discussed the role of student health centers in sexual counseling and STD prevention, the current state of sex therapy and sexological ethics.

Both our American and Chinese consultants donated valuable materials to the Archive.
