An Inquiry into Female Homosexuality in Medieval Europe

TSUI Lik Hang

Oriental Institute, University of Oxford, UK

¡¾Abstract¡¿The study of female homosexuality in medieval Europe is still very limited and preliminary. In this article, an attempt is made to provide a framework to further the study. I adopt the label ¡°homosexual¡± as having a predominant erotic inclination toward the own gender. By applying this definition, the article traces various normative texts in the medieval Europe to conclude that female homosexuality and homosexual activities exists. Condemnation of such activities was largely affected by theologians. As a result of their views, the society¡¯s attitudes towards female homosexuality experienced a gradual process of tolerance to suppression. The essay ends with an analysis connecting sexuality and conceptions about female homosexuality in medieval Europe.
